Reporting your child's absence from school

Nonsuch School for Girls has an expectation that all students will attend school throughout the academic year, except for in exceptional circumstances; it is expected that all students aim for at least 96% attendance each year.

Important Note:

We are unable to let any student attending an appointment leave the school site without prior written knowledge.   Students in Years 7 to 9 will NOT be able to leave the school site without a parent or carer.  If your daughter is in Year 10 or above, and you require her to make her own way to an appointment, please give your permission via the school office.

REPORTING DAILY UNPLANNED ABSENCES

Daily unplanned absences due to sickness or other exceptional unforeseen circumstances should be reported via the Arbor app or Arbor Parent Portal using the instructions below.  Absences should be reported each day and any subsequent days preferably before 8.30am, and by 9.00am at the latest.  If there is no communication from parents, then this absence will be automatically recorded as an unauthorised absence.

To report on-the-day absence:

  1. Log into the Arbor App or Parent Portal: https://nonsuch-high-school-for-girls.uk.arbor.education/
  2. Click on the Quick Actions button on the Portal or the Quick Actions menu (three lines in the lower left hand corner) and then click Attendance.
  3. Click the green Log Absence button.
  4. Input the start and end time for the absence and type in the reason for the absence. By default, the absence start and end times reflect the student's full day, but these can be adjusted as needed. Once you have filled in this data, click Log Absence. This will then be visible to school staff.
  5. Once this has been logged, school staff can accept or reject the absence. Approved absences appear in the Attendance tab of the Parent Portal or Arbor App.
  6. It is not possible to edit an existing absence request, so if you need to make any changes, you should delete the absence request and create a new one. To delete the absence, click on it and then click Cancel Change Request.

PLEASE NOTE:
It is not possible to delete an absence once it has been approved by us.  If you need to make any changes after this has happened, please contact the school office.

School policy states that:

If your child has been sick or is suffering from diarrhoea or both, they should remain at home until their symptoms have cleared.  Your child should not return to school until at least 48 hours have passed since the last episode of vomiting/ diarrhoea.

LEAVE OF ABSENCE REQUESTS
(including medical and dental appointments)

Please read the following information before requesting an absence.

  1. The decision over whether an absence is authorised rests with the school and the Headteacher.

  2. Leave of absence requests for one day of absence should be made at least two full school days in advance of the event. Requests for longer leave of absence (more than one day) must be made at least two weeks in advance.

  3. The DfE (Department for Education) states that parents should not take students on holiday in term time. Nonsuch High School for Girls will not give permission for students to go on holiday during term time.

  4. In line with DfE guidance, leave of absence will not be granted unless there are exceptional circumstances and then only for the briefest period possible.

  5. The school will not give permission for absence during internal and external assessments or examinations.

To request leave of absence, please email: attendance@nonsuchschool.org with the times, dates and evidence to support the absence, e.g. appointment letter or music exam booking.
Please note that without receipt of supporting evidence, requests will be recorded as unauthorised.

Is my child too ill for school?

We understand that deciding whether your daughter is well enough to attend school can sometimes be difficult. The NHS provides clear advice to help parents make informed decisions about common illnesses. In many cases, such as mild colds, headaches, or sore throats, children can still attend school safely and benefit from maintaining their routine.

However, if your daughter has a contagious condition (such as vomiting, diarrhoea, or a high fever), we ask that you follow NHS recommendations and keep them at home until they are well enough to return.

Good attendance is crucial for your child’s education, development, and wellbeing. We encourage all parents to consult the official NHS “Is my child too ill for school?” guidance when unsure, and to contact the school if you need further advice or support.
