The library is situated on the first floor of the new building of the school.  It is a welcoming and spacious environment with ample shelving, seating areas for comfort and for study, an IT area and an IT room. The library works closely with all departments across school to support literacy and a lifelong love of reading, and provides a comprehensive selection of relevant resources and information for students across the curriculum.

LibrarianThere are over 12,000 resources, incorporating a wide and constantly-updated selection of fiction books and non-fiction titles. We subscribe to JSTOR www.jstor.org which is a comprehensive online resource of thousands of academic journals and articles to support our students at KS4 and KS5.

The library is used in both a formal and informal setting.  Both the main area of the library, together with the IT area, can be booked out by different departments for research lessons, and all Year 7 and Year 8 students attend a fortnightly literacy lesson in the library taught by the librarian and English department colleagues.  The library is used by sixth formers for silent study periods, and the librarian delivers research lessons for students opting for the EPQ qualification in Year 12 and for all Year 10s taking the HPQ. During social times, the library is used for quiet individual study or as a space to relax and read.  There are four library book clubs for all years to enjoy during lunchtimes as well as reading-related events and activities such as Nonsuch Book Week take place where students can sign up and get involved.  The library is also regularly used as a space for visiting speakers and author visits. 

Students can manage their own library account using the library management system ‘Eclipse’. This is available 24 hours a day and can be used both onsite and offsite school.  As well as searching and renewing books, students can read and submit book reviews and recommendations for their peers.   

During the day there is a librarian and a number of student library helpers, some of whom are volunteering for their Duke of Edinburgh award.

After school the library hosts a Twilight session from 3.30 – 5.00 p.m. Monday to Thursday, in which students may use school computers to complete research or homework in a quiet, supervised environment.

We strongly encourage all students to become members of their local public library for even more access to reading material, including free access to online resources such as Press Reader, which has hundreds of periodicals, magazines and newspapers available.
