Learning Resource Centre

The Library is situated on the first floor of the new building of the school.  It is a welcoming and spacious environment with ample shelving, seating areas for comfort and for study, an IT area, a careers section and a private study room. The library promotes reading for pleasure and provides relevant resources and information that supports learning across the curriculum.

LibrarianThere are over 15,000 resources, incorporating fiction, non-fiction, online resources and periodicals together with a growing selection of e-books.  The library also subscribes to The Day which is a current affairs and daily news website as well as JSTOR, an online academic database.

The library is used in both a formal and informal setting.  Both the main area of the library, together with the IT area can be booked out by different departments for research lessons and all Year 7 and Year 8 students attend a fortnightly DEAR lesson in the library.  During social times, the library is used for quiet individual study or as a space to relax and read.  Across the year a number of book clubs and reading related events and activities take place where students can sign up and get involved.  The library is also regularly used as a space for visiting speakers.

Students can manage their own library account using the library management system ‘Eclipse’. This is available 24 hours a day and can be used both onsite and offsite school.  A mobile app. is also available for ease of use, to renew books or to undertake a quick search.  As well as searching and renewing books, students can read and submit book reviews and peruse reading lists targeted to them or a particular subject.

During the day there is a librarian and a number of student library helpers, some of whom are volunteering for their Duke of Edinburgh award, who are always on hand to help with any information required.

After school the library hosts a Twilight session from 3.30 – 5.00 p.m. Monday to Thursday, in which students may use the library resources to complete research or homework in a quiet supervised environment.
