Pastoral Care

At Nonsuch, pastoral care is central to all that we do in the school.

Throughout all school activities we put the needs of the learner first; students are encouraged to fulfil their potential and are helped to overcome any problems they may face.

All students are afforded opportunities to develop confidence, resilience, reflection and independence. We believe that these, and other capacities, will be key to them being able to keep themselves safe, to cope in difficult situations and forge successful lifelong relationships.

The form tutor is the central point of contact for every student and provides the crucial link between home and school. All tutor groups in the lower school are also allocated Sixth Form prefects who help with the care and development of our students. Tutors are supported by the Head of Year who also works within a broader team responsible for taking charge of pastoral care within school.

Each student is a member of a House which ensures that students participate widely within school life and enjoy the full co-curricular provision on offer.

To support the teaching staff there is a school counsellor who offers sensitive support and guidance to students who require it. In addition, we have a First Aid Room in which two fully-qualified first aiders provide full-time immediate medical care.

Our SEN coordinator works with girls who have special educational needs and ensures that provision is made for these students in order that they can access all aspects of the curriculum.

The cornerstone of our pastoral care education programme is the weekly tutorial programme. Topics and themes studied are generally in line with the National Curriculum and include drugs and alcohol education, emotional health and well-being, sex and relationship education and careers education. The topics are delivered by tutors in tutor groups through a wide range of activities including visits from outside speakers, structured discussions with other students and staff, and the critical evaluation of the media and the written word.

In addition, students take part in vertical tutorial sessions to foster ‘Learning to Learn’ study skills through a range of dynamic and relevant projects led by teaching staff.

Whole school and year group assemblies take place on a weekly basis and very often a moral message will be communicated.
