RECITAL EVENING
The Music Department’s annual Recital Evening, featuring Nonsuch’s more advanced musicians, was a tremendous success.  It was a delight hearing such a variety of talented musicians.  Particular highlights include: Ruby and Yehram (Year 10) playing a funky piano duet arrangement of Pachelbel’s ‘Canon’,
Sabrina (Year 10) playing Popper’s technically demanding ‘Polonaise’ on the cello and Alex (Year 10) playing Dussek’s extremely difficult ‘Allegro Con Spirito’ on the piano.   A massive well done to all the girls involved.

We were treated to a range of many different styles and particular highlights included Mr Austin’s two chamber groups: the Piano Quartet (Miss Waller, Chloe, Giulia and Sabrina) and the Horn Trio (Sophia, Soeun and Mr Austin). It was also lovely to see Dr Johnson’s string ensemble, which was made up of the junior members of the Symphony Orchestra, play the Corelli with such enthusiasm too. Catherine and her friends, along with Miss Waller, loved seeing the finalists perform live; they were all so incredibly talented and demonstrated a true passion for performing. The standard was exceptional. Catherine was over-the-moon that the cellist, Shaku, won as she plays the cello too! What a wonderful treat for a Sunday afternoon and evening!

On the evening of Tuesday 21st March  the Music Department put on one of their most ambitious spring concerts to date. The tickets sold like hot cakes and the quality of the performances was exceptional. There was a complete array of musical styles, ranging from Western Classical music to traditional African Drumming. Highlights included: the Concert Band performing Selections from Les Miserables; the Ukulele Group performing a mash-up of Sam Smith and Of Monsters and Men; Nonsuch Jazz performing Chicago; Vox Celestes performing an a cappella arrangement of Peter Piper; the newly-founded Indian Ensemble performing in traditional dress; Chamber Choir’s beautiful performance of The Banks of Doon with Lucy (Year 13) on solo violin; and the Symphony Orchestra playing Egmont Overture by Beethoven. Congratulations to all the girls involved - it was a thoroughly enjoyable evening! A special well done must be given to our Year 13 Leavers too (Catherine, Lucy, Phoebe, Becky and Christine) for whom this concert was their last. They have all been tremendous ambassadors for the Music Department and are all such accomplished musicians. You will be sorely missed by staff and students alike. NONSUCH YOUNG MUSICIAN COMPETITION 2016
The annual Nonsuch Young Musician Competition took place on the evening of the 3rd March in the School Hall. It was an exceptional evening and the array of talent was, quite simply, phenomenal. All the finalists played with such maturity, expertise and musicality; it was an absolute delight seeing them all perform to such an incredibly high standard! The external adjudicator, Nicholas Miller ARAM, had the impossible task of deciding who were going to be the winners of each category. His decision was as follows:

  • Overall Nonsuch Young Musician of the Year - Lorna, Year 11
  • Nonsuch Young Musician of the Year KS3 - Sophia, Year 9
  • Nonsuch Young Musician of the Year KS4 - Martha and Lorna, Year 11
  • Nonsuch Young Musician of the Year KS5 - Jasmine, Year 12

Nevertheless, he also made it very clear that all the finalists were winners, as the standard was so remarkably high – they should all be extremely proud of themselves! Well done!
